Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci through the wine route.
We start from Volterra and follow the 5568 towards Cecina. We'II cross the villages of Saline di Volterra and Ponteginori up to the Casino di Terra roundabout.
At the roundabout we'II take the second exit in the direction of Bibbona along the SPl 8 far about 2 km and then we'II turn on the right on the SPl 9 until we'II reach Bibbona. We'II pass the village in the direction of Cecina and we'II arrive in La California.
We'II travel far about 5 km until we reach San Guido where we'II turn right onta the famous avenue surrounded by cypress trees mentioned in the famous poem
by Carducci "Davanti a San Guido".
This avenue, almost 6 km long, bordered by
centuries-old cypress trees, will lead us to Bolgheri.

Bolgheri
Small village which is accessed through the castle that we find at the entrance.
Built in the Middle Ages, since the 13th century it belonged to the Della Gherardesca family, whose coat of arms is clearly visi bi e above the arch of the tower that serves as entrance to the village.
Here there are taverns, restaurants and wine bars where it is possible to taste the Bolgheri DOC wines. We'II continue on the SP16 in the direction of Castagneto Carducci, thus taking the " the wine route ". We are now surrounded by regular vineyards, bordered by pine and cypress trees.
Here are born the grapes that have made this area famous in the world: Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Guado al Tasso and many other prestigious wineries, but also family-run businesses where we can taste and buy not only wines but also oil and fruit.

Castagneto Carducci
Village overlooking the valley and offering spectacular views. Locateci on the top ofthe hill where the castle ofthe Counts Della Gherardesca stands, built a round the year a.d 1000. The ca stie, once surrounded by walls, was the nucleus of the inhabited center which developed into concentric rings. From Castagneto Carducci we can return to Volterra via the SP329 passing through the village of Sassetta, Monteverdi Marittimo, Canneto up to the Casino di Terra roundabout where we'II take the 5568 aga in to conclude our tour.
